Located in the grounds of The Maybury Centre since 1997, the Liaise Women’s Centre works to empower women and girls, particularly those from disadvantaged communities, to take control of their lives and also to maximise the quality of the lives of their families.

Liaise Women's Centre provides a safe and supportive environment for women to network, learn new skills, or get advice and information on a range of issues. Welcoming all women who live or work in Woking, regardless of differences. We are an organisation run by women, for women. The support workers and volunteers are of multicultural backgrounds, reflecting the community they work and live in. We run a variety of sessions which include counselling, art/craft, English classes, and a weekend homework club for primary school children.

LIAISE WOMEN'S CENTRE VOLUNTEER WINS AWARD FOR THE SECOND YEAR RUNNING

Greenoak Housing Association held their annual awards event to celebrate the wonderful volunteers of Woking who give so much to help our charities.

​​

2017 - Once again one of our volunteers, Mrs Shahida Shafiq, was nominated for an award and she was fortunate enough to win a runner-up prize.

​​

Mrs Shafiq has been volunteering and involved with Liaise for many years now.  She is here every week assisting with the English Language Classes and her input is invaluable.  Mrs Shafiq won a voucher for herself and £500 for Liaise.  This grant has been used to purchase iPads for the Women's English Class which will be a welcome addition. 

​

We are very thankful to Mrs Shafiq for her continued support of Liaise, the time and effort she regularly puts in for the Women and long may it continue.​

2016 - Maria Lima, a volunteer of Liaise Women’s Centre, was nominated and won the first runner up award.

​​

Maria is an artist and a truly inspirational person. She taught both women and children art. Maria ran the art classes during the week and weekends. The women are from diverse backgrounds and many have suffered domestic abuse or experienced personal tragedies in their lives.​​

COMMUNITY ART PROJECT GETS A RING SIDE SEAT IN THE TOWN

Working in partnership with local community group, Liaise Women’s Centre, Woking Borough Council refurbished one of the town’s open-air, curved seating areas in Christchurch Way using hand-crafted resin seating blocks created by members from the local group.

 

The inspiration for the Council funded project, entitled ‘Cushions Gardens’, followed one of its top priorities, recycling. The theme chosen by the group aimed to highlight the importance of reducing, reusing and recycling.

 

Using everyday recyclable items, the women created 34 eye-catching and thought-provoking designs which reflect different aspects of Woking, including used train tickets to represent the railway, old keyboard keys to spell out the H.G. Wells quote ‘What really matters is what you do with what you have’, and bottle tops to recreate the Borough’s coat of arms.

 

Maria Lima, a local volunteer art teacher who facilitated the workshops, said: “It was a privilege to lead this innovative project. In addition to the colourful and imaginative seats created, one of the best outcomes of the project was watching the girls and ladies who participated grow in confidence and rediscover how to tap into their natural creativity”.

Speaking about the importance of the project, Cllr Melanie Whitehand, Woking Borough Council’s Portfolio Holder for Grants to Voluntary and Community Organisations, said: “This exciting project highlights the depth of untapped artistic talent in our local communities, especially from women in our minority communities. Hopefully, it is the first of many joint ventures.”.
